Merzifon Business Center

Merzifon, a district of Amasya, is situated on the southern slopes of Tavşan (Taşan) Mountain in the Central Black Sea region, at the edge of the Merzifon Plain. At an altitude of 750 meters, Merzifon holds a strategic position on the axis connecting Istanbul, Ankara, and Samsun Port. The region's history of hosting multiple civilizations has contributed significantly to the development of its complex urban fabric.

The competition site is located near the geometric center of the city, equidistant from key urban focal points, and enjoys easy accessibility. This location holds cultural significance in the memory of the city's residents, providing a solid foundation for its revitalization with a new function, thereby enhancing its social sustainability.

Merzifon Business Center

To the east of the site, the Samsun-Merzifon Ring Road, a major transportation axis, extends through the area, with the residential fabric continuing from this axis toward the project site. The design area is strategically positioned, bordered by the bus station and industrial zone to the south, the stadium to the west, and the city center to the north. Thus, the site is integral to the city’s public transit network.

In summary, the environmental analysis underscores the importance of the site as a central axis connecting various focal points within the city. As indicated by the competition brief, the site is poised to become a new focal point not only as a business hub but also as a center of public circulation.

Merzifon’s geographical and meteorological characteristics—characterized by hot, dry summers and rainy winters—necessitate a design approach that accommodates the city’s natural conditions without compromising urban dynamism. The concept prioritizes social sustainability, ensuring the integration of sub-units and fostering a cohesive urban environment.

The design approach takes into consideration the needs of both healthy individuals and people with disabilities, emphasizing inclusivity. A design framework that allows the site to evolve and thrive has been pursued, with particular attention to facilitating social interaction and community engagement.

A "City Corridor" has been envisioned along the North-South axis, designed to promote social interaction. This transitional space serves as a formal and social link between the city center and the residential areas to the south, fostering connectivity and movement.

The proposed Merzifon Municipality Business and Life Center incorporates a variety of functions to meet the architectural program's diverse requirements. These functions vary in usage times and spatial demands, reflecting the diverse needs of the user population. The design solution emphasizes the cohesion of these differing elements while maintaining a clear spatial hierarchy.

The square, central to the project, is directly connected to the city corridor and designed to cater to the social needs of the urban population. It provides an opportunity for gatherings and socialization, supported by commercial and public units adjacent to the square. The design ensures that the public accessibility and transitional qualities of the space are preserved by placing semi-public areas above ground level.
